Installing OptiFine with Forge
26.1.2OptiFine can be loaded as a Forge mod, which lets you keep your other mods while still getting shader support and the OptiFine video settings. This works the same way on Windows, macOS, and Linux — the only thing that changes between platforms is where the mods folder lives.
How it works
OptiFine ships as a single .jar. When placed inside the mods folder of a Forge profile, Forge loads it like any other mod. Compatibility depends on three things matching: the Minecraft version, the Forge version, and the OptiFine build.
Prerequisites
- Minecraft Java Edition installed and launched at least once for the target version.
- Forge installed for the same Minecraft version (see the official Forge site).
- A matching OptiFine build from the Downloads page.
1. Install Forge
Download the Forge installer for your Minecraft version, run it, and choose Install client. Then open the Minecraft Launcher, select the new Forge profile, and launch it once. This creates the mods folder Forge reads from.
2. Locate the mods folder
- Windows:
%appdata%\.minecraft\mods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
3. Drop OptiFine in
Move the OptiFine .jar you downloaded into the mods folder. Keep the original file name — it should still start with OptiFine_.
4. Launch the Forge profile
Back in the Minecraft Launcher, select the Forge profile and click Play. On the main menu, open Mods — OptiFine should appear in the list alongside your other mods.
Troubleshooting
Game crashes on launch
Almost always a version mismatch. Re-verify the Minecraft version, Forge version, and the OptiFine build all target the same Minecraft release.
OptiFine not loading
Make sure the OptiFine .jar sits directly inside the mods folder, not in a subfolder. The file name should still start with OptiFine_.
Mod conflict
Some shader-related or rendering mods overlap with OptiFine. Disable them one at a time to find the conflict.
