Installing Shaders on Windows

OptiFine includes built-in shader support. Once OptiFine is installed, adding a shader pack is just dropping a .zip file into the shaderpacks folder and clicking it in the Video Settings menu. You do not need to unzip the file.

Choose your OS

Prerequisites

  • OptiFine already installed for your Minecraft version — see Installing OptiFine.
  • A shader pack downloaded as a .zip file. Popular options include Complementary, BSL, and Sildur's Vibrant Shaders.

1. Open the OptiFine profile

Launch the Minecraft Launcher and start the OptiFine profile. Wait for the main menu to appear.

2. Open the shaders menu

On the main menu, click OptionsVideo SettingsShaders. This is only visible when OptiFine is active.

3. Open the shaderpacks folder

Click Shaders Folder at the bottom-left of the Shaders menu. Minecraft opens your shaderpacks folder in the file manager. On Windows, this folder lives at:

%appdata%\.minecraft\shaderpacks

4. Move the shader pack in

Drag the shader .zip into the open folder. Do not extract it — OptiFine loads the archive directly.

5. Enable the pack

Return to Minecraft. The shader pack now appears in the Shaders menu list. Click its name to enable it — Minecraft reloads the world with the shaders active.

Pick a shader that matches your OptiFine version
Older shader packs may not work with newer OptiFine builds. Most pack pages list the supported OptiFine and Minecraft version range — check before downloading.

Performance tips

Shaders are GPU-heavy. If your FPS drops:

  • Lower the shader's internal profile (most packs include Low / Medium / High).
  • Reduce the Minecraft render distance to 12 chunks or less.
  • Disable optional effects like motion blur, volumetric clouds, and depth-of-field.
